Perhaps more than ever, people are prioritising lifestyle, taking health into their own hands and spending money on their well-being. This is going beyond intermittent fasting and mindfulness, as some say this industry is worth over $4 trillion.
Yet at the same time health care cost are escalating. Non-communicable ‘lifestyle’ diseases, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer, account for about 75% of these costs. That money is spent on repair & recovery.
Clearly, there are barriers in access to prevention services that keep people well – rather than making them feel better.
The opportunity here is changing long-term behaviours through a focus on resilience and self-management. Today’s e-health technologies allow for increased personalisation of services, better biometric monitoring and smart incentives around behavioural change.
Integrating these technologies in citizens’ daily urban system could supercharge prevention at a fraction of the cost, and ultimately boost urban vitality.
